Bible Studies

Assumptions and expectations…we hold to them all the time.  We make assumptions about people based on how they look or what they wear.  We have expectations about life and the way it should be.  From experience, we also know that assumptions and expectations can often be wrong.

When the people of Israel asked God to give them a king long ago, they made assumptions about what their king should be like.  Their king should be strong and mighty in battle. He should command the respect of nations with his mere presence.  But God’s pick for king fit a different mold.  The king he chose for his people was a humble shepherd from the Bethlehem countryside.  His name was David, the youngest of eight sons.  He was a young man whom no one thought would be king.

But king he was, defeating the mightiest of enemies in Goliath, building Israel into a mighty nation, and restoring the people’s hope and faith in God.  By God’s grace and guidance, David ruled as the great shepherd-king of Israel, proof that assumptions and expectations are often incorrect.

As great as King David was, he was merely a shadow of another shepherd-king that came to fight man’s greatest enemies.  Centuries after David rose from his humble Bethlehem roots, another king came from humble roots.  Born in a Bethlehem barn, God’s promised Savior did not appear as people expected.  The Bible tells us, “He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.” (Isaiah 53:2)  This shepherd-king did not meet expectations and he was rejected.

However, his rejection was part of God’s plan.  It was through humble service that Christ’s kingdom was established.  “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).  Jesus’ service led him to an ugly cross, an unexpected place for a king to be found.  But it was on the cross that Jesus won the victory against the devil by paying the price for our sins.  His return to life sealed the victory over death and in heaven he rules as King of Kings for all of eternity.

David was a musician (he played the harp) and the first in a line of Kings from which Jesus was eventually born.
